In 1913, the PA Game Commission reintroduced Elk into the state however, it was a different species known as the Rocky Mountain Elk. Due to European expansion and over hunting this massive beast became extinct. Over 400 years ago, Pennsylvania was home to an estimated 100,000 Eastern Woodland Elk that roamed freely across the state.
